5 Common ERP Upgrade Misconceptions

by | Feb 20, 2019 | Dynamics NAV Upgrade, Microsoft Dynamics 365

We often come across businesses that are existing users of Microsoft Dynamics NAV but are putting an upgrade off due to concerns they’re facing. We’ve heard a variety of different concerns before but we want to assure you that there is nothing to worry about when upgrading your ERP – it can be much more beneficial to upgrade than continue to use legacy systems as we’ve covered in a previous blog post. Now we will be sharing 5 common misconceptions we’ve heard about upgrading ERP and give our take on it to help you feel more relaxed about upgrading.

1. I can’t afford to upgrade

If you have paid for your BREP, when upgrading to Dynamics 365 Business Central the license costs are eliminated, it is simply the cost of implementation, training and support that is involved. Thanks to our unique blend of offshore & onshore teams, our prices almost always come in lower than other competitors, with customers seeing their upgrade bills go down by over 60%, saving over £25,000. On top of this, our Fixed Price Upgrade offer means that any risk of overrun is taken away from you as any extra cost is on us.

2. My system is heavily customised and I need to keep MY customisations after upgrading

A lot of customers have come to us with this concern and we understand customisations can make upgrades a little difficult, however you’ll be pleased to know that heavy customisation won’t stop you enjoying the benefits of Business Central. We carry out a detailed assessment before any work begins to ensure your upgrade is properly planned and well managed. Our experienced team are here to help you get the exact functionality you need to run your business effectively.

When customisations are very specific to your business and there is no standard functionality available in the new version to replace it, we recommend utilising Business Centrals Extension’s feature, taking the customised code away from the source code. Though this comes at an extra cost, it will save you time and money in the long run when future upgrades will be much more straightforward. You’ll also be happy to know that we treat any data in customisations as we would a legacy system, allowing it to be migrated when you upgrade.

3. An upgrade is too risky

We understand that you may have had a bad experience in the past with an ERP implementation however, we assure you that Mercurius IT is a safe pair of hands. Our dedicated upgrade team have successfully completed many upgrade projects and can foresee the problems you may face.

All developments we do at Mercurius IT follow the Microsoft Sure Step Methodology and are piloted in a test environment before go-live, ensuring your upgrade goes smoothly. Furthermore, our Fixed Price Upgrade offer means you will never pay more than quoted and we mitigate any risk to ourselves. We have a selection of customer references we can offer upfront, direct from our biggest advocates in the market.

4. An upgrade will be too daunting for users

It is understandable that users might be daunted by a new interface so we do everything we can to ensure that they are comfortable and confident with the system before go-live. Business Central does come with a new UI, but it has been designed to help users accelerate their productivity and allow for easier navigation throughout the application – we’re sure you can imagine it will be quicker and easier than a legacy system that is years old.

We involve end users early on in the project to understand their positions and requirements and provide sufficient training so that, by go-live, they have already seen and tested the system.

5. I won’t benefit from upgrading

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is the most modern, intelligent ERP solution that Microsoft has released yet. From the roadmap that has been released, it shows that Business Central will be around for a long time, with no more yearly releases that we were used to previously but with bi-annual updates.

A deep integration to other products in the Microsoft ecosystem, including Office 365, Dynamics 365, SharePoint and the Microsoft Power Platform – as well as lots of in-built intelligent functionality. Business Central has been designed to increase productivity and create real value for your business. Furthermore, the solution is compliant to new legislation’s such as GDPR and MTD, any users of NAV 2013 and before aren’t compliant to either.

We hope this blog post has cleared up any concerns you have about upgrading your Microsoft Dynamics NAV solution. If you’re looking to take the next step and upgrade, visit our Fixed Price upgrade web page and see why Mercurius IT is the right partner to go with.
