The benefits are clear. But staying on Dynamics AX carries significant dangers.
Here is what running unsupported software means for your enterprise.

Support Ended January 2023

The Real Cost of Staying on Dynamics AX

Microsoft ended extended support for every version of Dynamics AX. AX 2012 R3: the last version stopped receiving security patches on 10 January 2023. Here is what that means for your organisation today.

No Security Patches

New vulnerabilities are discovered monthly. Microsoft
is not fixing them for AX. Your ERP which processes every financial transaction and holds supplier,
customer, and employee data is unpatched. Auditors
and cyber insurers are already asking questions.

Integration Failures

Modern APIs, cloud services, and partner systems increasingly require endpoints that AX cannot provide natively. Every year, more third-party vendors drop AX connector support, forcing your IT team to build and maintain custom bridges.

Regulatory Drift

UK tax rules change. MTD requirements evolve.
HMRC filing formats update. AX does not receive regulatory updates. Your finance team is manually working around requirements that D365 handles automatically.

Rising Maintenance Costs

Finding AX developers is getting harder and more expensive. The talent pool is shrinking as consultants move to D365. The longer you wait, the fewer
qualified people are available to maintain your
system and the more they charge.

The question is not whether to move. It is whether you move on your timeline or are forced to move on someone else’s.

So what exactly do you move to? Here is what Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain looks like in 2026.

What D365 Finance & Supply Chain Replaces AX With

When Microsoft retired Dynamics AX, they replaced it with two purpose-built
cloud applications that share the same data layer.

Dynamics 365 Finance

Your Finance Operations, Automated

General ledger, accounts payable, accounts  receivable,          and fixed assets

Multi-entity, multi-currency, and intercompany                          accounting

Automated bank reconciliation and financial close

Cash flow forecasting with Copilot AI predictions

Built-in HMRC MTD compliance and global regulatory              reporting

Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management

Your Supply Chain, Visible End to End

Procurement, production planning, warehouse, and                  inventory management

Demand forecasting with Copilot-generated insights and         explainability

Quality management with sample handling and testing             workflows

Warehouse management with mobile app and real-time           tracking

Supplier collaboration portal and contract lifecycle                   management

Shared Dataverse + Azure cloud infrastructure

Both products share the same database, the same user interface, and the same security model.
Your team learns one system. Your data lives in one place. If you need both, you licence both.
If you only need Finance, you licence Finance.

And Copilot AI is built into both. Here is what that means for your finance and supply chain teams.
Copilot AI – Included With Every Licence

Copilot AI: Built Into D365. Missing From AX.

Dynamics AX was built before AI existed in enterprise software. D365 Finance & Supply Chain
Management ships with Copilot, an AI assistant that works inside every module.
No add-on. No extra licence.

Natural Language ERP Queries

Ask ‘Show me all purchase orders over £50,000 from last quarter’ in plain English. Copilot translates your question into a
query and returns the answer.

Demand Forecasting with Explainability

Copilot generates demand forecasts and explains why showing which historical patterns, seasonal trends, or external
factors influenced the prediction.

Bank Reconciliation Assistance

Copilot suggests matches between bank statement lines and open transactions, learning from your approval patterns to improve accuracy over time.

Purchase Order Change Detection

When a supplier changes a PO
confirmation (price, quantity, delivery
date), Copilot flags the discrepancy and suggests how to respond.

Collections Letter Drafting

Generate personalized, professional collection communications based on customer payment history, outstanding balance, and relationship context.

Supplier Communications Agent

Autonomous AI agent that handles routine supplier queries, order confirmations, and delivery updates (arriving 2026 wave 1).

Every Copilot feature listed above works inside Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management today (except where noted). None of these capabilities exist in any version of Dynamics AX and never will.

Copilot is what you gain. But what about everything you already have in AX?
Here is how we make sure nothing gets left behind.

Full Database Upgrade

Best for: AX 2012 R2 or R3 with manageable
customisations

Your entire database transactions, master data, history
is converted and brought forward into D365. Customisations are migrated or rebuilt using the D365 extension framework. You keep your audit trail intact.

Full transaction history preserved
Customisation code converted
 Audit trail remains intact
Requires AX 2012 R2 or R3 as starting point

VS

Clean Re-Implementation

Best for: AX 2009, heavily customised AX 2012, or organisations wanting a fresh start

Master data and open transactions are migrated into
a brand-new D365 environment. Historical data stays accessible in your legacy AX database or is moved
into an Azure data warehouse for reporting and compliance.

Start with a clean, optimised system
Eliminate years of accumulated workarounds
Faster implementation timeline
Historical data archived in Azure for compliance

Implementation Process

How Your AX to D365 Migration Works

Every project follows a structured methodology. No surprises. No scope creep.
You know what is happening at every stage.

1

Discovery & Assessment

We audit your AX environment: version, modules in use, customisations, integrations, ISV products, data volume, and user count. You get a written assessment with a clear migration path, timeline, and fixed-price quote.

2

Solution Design

We map your current business processes to D365 Finance and Supply Chain Management. We identify what moves as-is, what needs reconfiguring, and what should be retired. You sign off on the design before we build anything.

3

Build & Configure

We set up D365, configure modules, rebuild customisations as extensions, connect integrations, and set up security roles. Your AX system keeps running. Your team keeps working.

4

Data Migration

We extract, cleanse, and load your data master data, open transactions, and historical records (where applicable). Every record is validated before and after migration. Data integrity reports are provided.

2

Testing & Training

End-to-end functional testing, user acceptance testing with your team, and hands-on training for every user role.
We do not go live until your team is confident.

3

Go-Live & Hyper-Care

Coordinated cutover on a date you choose. Hyper-care support for the first weeks after go-live. We are on call to fix issues in real time. Then ongoing managed support if you need it.

Typical timelines: 12-16 weeks for mid-market upgrades, 16-30 weeks for complex enterprise migrations with multiple entities and heavy customisation. We scope it precisely during Discovery so you know exactly what to expect.

That is the process. But why Mercurius specifically? Here is what sets us apart.

Fixed Price, Fixed Scope

Your quote is your final invoice. We scope the project in Discovery, agree a fixed
price, and absorb the risk. No change orders. No hourly overruns. The
commercial risk sits with us, not you.

Dynamics 365 Is All We Do

We do not sell Salesforce. We do not sell SAP. We do not sell HubSpot. Every consultant, developer, and architect in our team works exclusively on Microsoft Dynamics 365. That focus means fewer mistakes, faster delivery, and deeper
product knowledge.

Free AX Health Check

Before you commit to anything, we run a complimentary health check on your existing AX system. We identify issues you know about and the ones you do not. You get a written report with findings and recommendations whether or not you proceed with us.

Do not just take our word for it. Here is what our clients say.

What Our Clients Say

“Mercurius came in, had a good understanding of not just what we wanted today but what our strategy was for the group going forward, and came up with several proposals looking at what was the best fit in terms of a system that could grow with the business as the business grew.”

Brian Stringer
Chairman, Wescom Group

“Not only did Mercurius beat our existing partner’s quote by a significant margin, they did it at a fixed price — removing our commercial risk. In the end, they guided us carefully through the process and also implemented some great improvements to our business.”

Nicholas Newitt

Director, Newitts & Co. Ltd.
Wondering about the commercial side? Here is how licensing works.

D365 Licensing, Explained Simply

Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain Management runs on a per-user, per-month subscription.
Microsoft handles hosting, updates, security patches, and disaster recovery.

Named User Licences

Each user who needs access gets their
own licence. There are different licence types depending on the level of access required full users, team members, and device-only users. We help you map the right licence to each role to avoid overspending.

Automatic Updates, No Upgrade Projects

D365 receives two major releases per year and monthly quality updates. Microsoft applies them automatically. You never face another multi-month upgrade project. You are always on the latest version with the latest Copilot features.

Bridge to the Cloud Discount

Microsoft offers qualifying AX on-premises customers a promotional discount when migrating to D365 Finance & Supply Chain Management. We help you check eligibility and apply the programme as part of your migration.

Microsoft updates D365 every two weeks. You get new features, security patches, and regulatory updates
automatically, no extra cost, no downtime. Your infrastructure is hosted on Azure with 99.9% uptime SLA.

Licensing sorted. Now let’s talk about the integrations your business depends on.

Integrations That Work Out of the Box

AX integrations were custom-built and expensive to maintain. D365 ships with native
connectors to the Microsoft ecosystem and an open API layer for everything else.
D365 FSCM integrations

For third-party systems EDI providers, WMS platforms, e-commerce, payroll, CRM,
D365 Finance & Supply Chain exposes a full REST API and supports OData endpoints.
We build and test every integration as part of your fixed-price project.

Almost there. Let’s answer the questions we hear most from enterprise IT and finance teams.

AX to D365 Migration FAQs

Straight answers to the questions every buyer asks before they commit.

Is our version of AX supported at all?

No. Microsoft ended extended support for every version of Dynamics AX. AX 2012 R3 was the last, and its final security patch was released on 10 January 2023. AX 2012 R2, AX 2012, and AX 2009 lost support even earlier. No version of AX receives security updates, regulatory updates, or product improvements from Microsoft.

What is the difference between an upgrade and a re-implementation?

An upgrade converts your entire AX 2012 database – all transactions, history, and customisation code directly into D365. A re-implementation starts with a clean D365 environment and migrates only master data and open transactions. Historical data is archived in Azure. We recommend the right path based on your AX version, customisation complexity, and business goals.

How long does the migration take?

Mid-market organisations with moderate customisations typically go live in 12 to 16 weeks. Complex enterprise projects with multiple legal entities, heavy customisations, and large data volumes can take 16 to 30 weeks. We define the exact timeline during our free Discovery assessment.

How much business downtime will we experience during go-live?

We engineer our cutovers for zero operational disruption. Migration and testing are conducted in parallel environments, and the final cutover is strategically scheduled during weekends or your lowest-impact periods. You log out of your legacy system on Friday and log into a fully tested D365 environment on Monday.

What happens after we go live? Do you provide ongoing support?

A successful go-live is just the beginning of our partnership. We provide comprehensive UK-based managed services, dedicated user training, and proactive system optimisation. We don’t just fix bugs; we hold quarterly reviews to ensure your team is fully adopting the software and maximising the ROI of your Microsoft investment.

What happens to our AX customisations?

Every customisation is assessed during Discovery. Standard D365 functionality replaces many old workarounds. Remaining customisations are rebuilt as D365 extensions, which are upgrade-safe and maintained through future releases. We do not carry forward technical debt.

We are on AX 2009. Can we still migrate?

Yes, but there is no direct upgrade path from AX 2009 to D365. The recommended approach is a clean re-implementation on D365 Finance & Supply Chain Management, migrating master data and open transactions using Microsoft’s data migration framework. We have done this many times.

Will D365 integrate with our existing third-party software and ISVs?

Yes. Business Central offers robust integration capabilities via standard APIs and the Power Platform. Whether you use specialised warehouse scanning (like Tasklet Factory), automated document management (like Continia), or bespoke legacy databases, our Solution Architects map and secure every integration point during the Discovery phase.

What does 'fixed price' actually mean?

It means the price we quote after Discovery is the price you pay. We do not bill by the hour. If the project takes longer than expected, we absorb the cost. The commercial risk sits with Mercurius, not with you. Brian Stringer at Wescom Group and Nicholas Newitt at Newitts & Co. both chose us specifically because of this.

Does Microsoft offer any financial incentives to migrate?

Yes. Microsoft’s Bridge to the Cloud programme offers qualifying on-premises AX customers a promotional discount on D365 licences. Microsoft’s AIM (Accelerate, Innovate, Move) programme also provides migration assessments and investment offers for qualifying customers. We help you check eligibility for both programmes.
